Taper's Comments:
The "Lone Star Cafe" and "The Bottom Line" were my two fave venues in New York City,
and about the only two where I could see a show early enough to be able to make the
last train home to New Jersey. The "Lone Star" was in an old row home. Very narrow
and deep. The stage was more in the front of the place, across from the bar against
the wall, and in a lot of the club, the sightlines were poor. I always booked a seat early
in the balcony, looking straight down on the stage. The "Lone Star" had a real relaxed
atmosphere, and the staff were nice folks, at least to me.
Well, the "Trips Festival" about sums it up, as this was a weird show. Stoner City for sure!
Pretty lively audience. They announced several times prior to the show, that no taping was
to be permitted. It was the only time I ever heard an announcement like that in the "Lone
Star". I believe the band was recording this show for possible release, or had found somebody
selling bootlegs of previous shows. I have no idea for certain. Despite the no taping ban,
I saw more tapers per square inch than at any show I can remember! There were some
incredible rigs, all professional recorders, microphones on boom stands, etc. I sat with
some clown who seemed pretty wasted, who had such a rig. Real nice, but large deck, with
two Shure SM58 microphones duck taped to the railing in the balcony. It would have been
easily visible from the stage. He also seemed to think the whole table belonged to him,
despite the other three people who were sitting there. You'll hear some comments where
I ask for a bit of room. You'll also hear where he gets paranoid, and wants to place his
recorder on the floor, then continually moves it around, doing nothing but drawing attention
to himself. Well, why he ran off to the Men's room or wherever, the band roadie, who is
searching the club, finds his gear, and takes the tape during "All Worth The Price". Of
course, he thinks it's my gear! Anyway, it appeared they shut down everybody taping the
show, at least the ones who weren't stealth like me.
As to the show, KINGFISH opened, and nearly put me to sleep. Pretty boring stuff, at least
for me. Really enjoyed THE SOUNDS OF SAN FRANCISCO set, especially with the two great
guitars of Cipollina and Douglass. I was told that Joey Covington quit mid-set during the
second show, and had to be replaced for the balance of the tour. Maybe somebody can
elaborate on that? The band member that introduced his song during the set sounded a bit
sarcastic about it, so maybe that's what triggered the walk out? Anyway, enjoy! - bpthree

"here's how this went. my friend produced these shows at the lone star. kingfish was touring
without a drummer and dave margen was filling in on bass. after the early show, i offered
my services for their late set. after a brief introduction, we agreed on a few songs
which went quite well. later on, during the sounds of s.f., in the middle of
stormy monday, joey covington decided he was done for the night and left the stage.
alex ligertwood attempted to play drums just long enogh to finish the song.
at the song's conclusion, i asked alex if he would like me to finish the set with them
as i'd just played with kingfish. he invited me up and we had a great time, if only for
a couple of songs. i missed the ending of gimme some lovin but i thought it went very well
considering i'd never played with them before. it was quite exciting to be able to play
with some of my heroes. a night i won't forget." - Dave Tamarkin

"here's a video i've been wanting to transfer for quite a while. i was having some problems with my old setup and just got a new one so
here you go. the sounds of s.f. during their 1986 trips festival tour recorded at hunts in burlington, vt. i know the promoter of the
shows so i was able to get this video. technically it's not a pro shot as it was just a single camera mounted on a tripod but it is very
good since it was done with permission. it also includes audio taken from the sb. this took place right after the nyc show that i sat in
for and by this point, joey covington had left the tour so once again, they are assisted by a local drummer. he does a very nice job
considering he probably didn't know most of the material. it's a full 2 hour set and includes guests matt kelly and steve kimock from
opening band, the post weir version of kingfish. the quality is very good and a little better than the screen shots i think. this is the
only complete video i've seen of this band." - Dave Tamarkin

"I received this one in a trade quite some time ago; it came with a standard menu and just to celebrate the second EZT/DIME anniversary I re-edited and created a new menu and chapters; Video quality is excellent, a little dark due to scarce Lupo's illumination; the video shooter loses the camera control from time to time but overall is highly enjoyable ( will post some screenshots).
The audio is excellent as well, despite a noisy audience ( will post an audio mp3 sampler)
and the performance is superb (Cipo/Douglass twin guitar solos are astounding..)

SOSF were a really fun band.... the recording quality of this
show is not super, but really clean, and even if i have some
soundboards of SOSF, i picked up this concert cause in my mind
is it full of energy and i particularly like the choice of the songs
performed... and is it a lot of fun... for sure i'll have the
occasion to share some other SOSF in the near future...
